Lake County voters initiated the election season on Tuesday morning, leading to optimism for the November general election from Elections and Registration Director Michelle Fajman. She said she anticipates fewer lines as more people opt to vote early. ‘If you know who you’re going to vote for, come out and get it done,’ she advised.
Michael and Marcia Foreman from Valparaiso were at the Porter County Administration Building on Oct. 6, marking their participation in early voting. Alongside Rose Ross, also of Valparaiso, they emphasized the importance of having their voices heard.
‘We always vote early because it’s more convenient,’ Marcia Foreman remarked, noting that early voting prevents the hassle of standing in long lines, especially in cold weather.
Lake County saw a promising start with 1,549 participants by the afternoon, surpassing previous first-day numbers. Fajman highlighted the addition of an early voting day on Sunday, Oct. 25, to accommodate voters who can’t be present on Election Day.
On Oct. 25, voting will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lake County Government Center in Crown Point, with varied hours at other locations including East Chicago, Hammond, Lowell, Highland, Gary, Hobart, Munster, St. John Township, and Winfield.
Porter County’s early voting continues until Nov. 2 with locations such as Chesterton Town Hall, Hebron Community Center, NIRPC Building Lobby, North County Complex, Porter County Administration Building, Union Township Fire Station, and the Valparaiso Training Center.
Frank Baccino from Crown Point, aged 87, related his voting experience. He prefers voting early due to shorter lines compared to Election Day.
Jaranata Sharp, another resident, had a positive experience voting early, expressing satisfaction with the quick process. She values candidates who emphasize affordability.
Gwenell White Sandifer and Arnold Reyes, residents of Crown Point, echoed similar sentiments about the importance of early voting and pressing issues such as unity and affordability.
Frank Baccino emphasized the importance of voting annually and expressed concerns over low voter turnout.
In Valparaiso, Charlotte Sterling and JoEllen Raby shared their experiences, noting the increased participation and importance due to personal insights and community needs.
Despite an initial hiccup with mail-in ballots, Raymond Riddell’s voting issue was resolved on-site. Details for Lake County and Porter County early voting are available at their respective official websites.
