The Institute for the Study of Modern Authoritarianism (ISMA) has conducted a survey indicating a shift in attitudes among voters who supported Kamala Harris for president. Since the 2024 presidential election, these voters have shown increased cynicism toward American elites.
ISMA’s survey, part of The UnPopulist publication, highlights the growing disillusionment. The UnPopulist focuses on safeguarding liberal democracy against authoritarian threats in the United States and globally.
In ISMA’s August 2024 survey, before the election, 59% of those planning to vote for Harris strongly agreed that at least one of six American elites had harmed individuals like themselves due to selfish interests. By June of this year, that percentage rose to 69% among those who confirmed voting for Harris. This 10-point increase marks the only significant change detected among the various populist attitudes the survey monitors.
The survey provides insights into the evolving political climate and voter sentiment regarding leadership and the influence of elites. It emphasizes a growing skepticism and demand for accountability from prominent figures within the nation.
