Anesthesiologist Questions Lethal Injection After Christa Pike’s Survival

1 hour ago 0

Anesthesiologist Dr. Joel Zivot recently spoke with Bill Hemmer to discuss the legal repercussions following a judge’s order for Tennessee officials to preserve evidence from the attempted execution of Christa Pike. Dr. Zivot had advised Pike’s legal team regarding issues with the lethal injection drugs used in the failed procedure. Pike remains on death row after surviving the execution attempt.

Christa Pike was discharged from a hospital and returned to the Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center. She has been in this facility for over 30 years. According to her attorneys, despite surviving two doses of pentobarbital on September 30, Pike experienced serious medical issues. A joint statement from her legal team acknowledged her gratitude to first responders and medical staff for their assistance. Pike continues to receive medical care while in prison.

Attorney Stephen Ferrell indicated that Pike has begun walking around her hospital room, though she suffers from arm injuries and memory problems. Previously, her attorneys believed Pike was brain dead, but she unexpectedly regained consciousness.

Pike faced the death penalty for the 1995 torture and murder of Colleen Slemmer. The failed execution has led to legal proceedings, with a Tennessee judge mandating the preservation of evidence from the execution attempt.

Governor Bill Lee of Tennessee has suspended executions for the rest of 2026. The future of Pike’s death sentence remains uncertain.
