Michael Jordan’s Iconic Jersey Sets Record Sale

1 hour ago 0

Michael Jordan, although retired for over two decades, continues to break records in the memorabilia market. A jersey worn by Jordan during the 1998 NBA Finals, prominently featured in ‘The Last Dance’ documentary, recently sold for $14 million. This makes it the most expensive piece of basketball memorabilia ever sold.

Hunt Auctions, based in Pennsylvania, announced that Ron Firman, a real estate investor from Miami, purchased the jersey. This iconic red Chicago Bulls garment was worn by Jordan during Game 2 against the Utah Jazz on June 5, 1998. The Bulls won their sixth championship within eight seasons, underscoring Jordan’s status as the GOAT.

David Hunt, president of Hunt Auctions, emphasized Jordan’s prominent role in sports memorabilia. He noted, “Michael Jordan’s importance has now escalated to an elite asset class, akin to iconic works of art.” The sale of the jersey marks the second-highest price paid for a game-worn jersey in sports history, topped only by Babe Ruth’s 1932 “called shot” jersey, sold for $24.12 million.

Interestingly, this sale adds to other notable transactions. Jordan’s jersey from Game 1 sold for $10.1 million in 2022, and his Game 3 jersey fetched $12.3 million recently. Together, these jersey sales from the 1998 Finals total over $36 million.

Ron Firman expressed his excitement about acquiring the piece, stating, “Michael Jordan was an incredibly talented player admired globally. I’m thrilled with the purchase.” The enthusiasm around Jordan’s memorabilia extends beyond jerseys. In 2023, his Air Jordans from Game 2 sold for $2.2 million, setting a record for the most expensive sneakers at the time.

Despite nearly 30 years since Jordan’s iconic championship-winning shot against Utah, collectors continue to invest heavily to possess a piece of his legacy. Michael Jordan’s influence in the memorabilia market remains unparalleled.
