Bison Attacks in Yellowstone: A Growing Concern

1 hour ago 0

Jesse Watters reports on the alarming incidents involving bison in Yellowstone National Park. Recent attacks, including a man flung eight feet and a woman dragged, highlight the speed and danger these massive animals pose.

Vehicle Encounter with Charging Bison

An unfortunate incident unfolded in Yellowstone when a bison charged a pickup truck during an early-morning drive. The frightening episode took place when the driver stopped after noticing the animal on the dark road.

The video shared on social media captures the bison rushing towards the vehicle, launching into its front end. The driver, Kyle Weber, a seasonal mechanic, was journeying south from Canyon Village when the bison appeared near Mud Volcano.

Weber reacted by braking and waiting for the bison to move. However, rather than walking away, the bison charged and struck his truck’s front-left side, jolting him inside.

“I slammed on my brakes and was just sitting there watching and waiting for him to continue walking,” Weber recounted.

Damage and Reflection

The impact pushed Weber’s truck backward by a foot and a half, denting the bumper and hood and damaging a side marker light. While Weber plans upgrades as part of the repairs, he considers keeping the dented hood as a story memento.

“I definitely got jolted. I knew they hit hard, but that was pretty rough,” Weber noted.

This unsettling event mirrors previous encounters, such as one involving Carl Isom-McDaniel at Bridge Bay Campground, which left him with severe injuries after he was launched into the air by a bison. His hospital stay followed surgery for a femur broken in multiple places.

The Dangers of Bison

Bison, known for their unexpected speed, continue to surprise visitors with their power. These incidents are stark reminders of their unpredictable behavior.

Maintaining a safe distance from wildlife, especially bison, is imperative for all park goers. Yellowstone’s experiences serve as an important warning to prioritize safety around these formidable animals.
