Authorities in Orlando, Florida, have arrested a man on a murder charge related to the disappearance of his ex-fiancée, Michelle Parker, nearly 15 years ago. The announcement came on Wednesday, revealing that Dale Smith Jr. is accused of second-degree murder.
Michelle Parker, who was 33 when she disappeared, was last seen on November 17, 2011. Her disappearance coincided with the airing of a ‘The People’s Court’ episode featuring a heated argument between Parker and Smith over an engagement ring. Just one day after she went missing, Parker’s SUV was discovered abandoned; however, she has not been found. Parker and Smith shared two children.
Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith stated at a news conference that Dale was the last known person to have contact with Michelle on the day of her disappearance. She had dropped off their children at his home on that day. The chief explained that the department expanded its investigation in the past year, thoroughly reexamining evidence and using advanced digital forensic techniques.
“We reexamined testimony and conflicting statements made by the suspect and used advanced digital forensics to uncover and analyze additional evidence,” Chief Smith explained.
Investigations revealed that Smith Jr. had been interviewed multiple times by investigators, and he participated in several depositions. Detective Phillip McMican highlighted that Smith Jr. gave varying answers to specific questions over the years.
According to Detective McMican, advancements in forensic technology played a key role in interpreting evidence related to vehicles, electronic devices, phones, and computers. This technology provided insights that were not possible 15 years ago. Additionally, McMican noted the discovery of new evidence within the last year, although details leading to the arrest were not specified.
In a statement, the police indicated that even though Parker remains missing, evidence suggests that Dale Smith Jr. is responsible for her murder. CBS affiliate WKMG-TV reported that security footage showed Parker dropping her children off at Smith Jr.’s residence on the night of her disappearance. The following day, her vehicle was found in an Orlando parking lot, and divers discovered her cellphone in a lake in December 2011. Smith Jr. has been a suspect since shortly after her disappearance.
