Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth delivered a significant address at a major Army convention amid organizational changes within the military’s largest branch.
Speaking for over an hour, Hegseth defended his proposal to reduce the number of general officers at the Pentagon by 20 percent. He also urged Congress to approve President Trump’s proposed $1.5 trillion defense budget. Throughout his speech, Iran war protesters interrupted him multiple times, particularly as he discussed the department’s plan to acquire more drones and other military systems.
Sean Parnell, the Pentagon’s chief spokesperson and Hegseth’s preferred choice for Army Secretary, introduced the panel featuring top military officials. Alongside Hegseth, Acting Army Secretary Adam Telle, Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao, Air Force Secretary Troy Meink, and Derrick Anderson, the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict appeared. Anderson has been considered by some officials as a potential Army Secretary candidate.
The panel addressed acquisition reform and efforts to streamline procedures within the Pentagon.
President Trump, at a campaign rally in Arizona, implied that leakers involved in the leaks about U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities should face severe punishment.
Meanwhile, Ukraine voiced concerns about air defense operations being hindered by unanticipated restrictions on SpaceX satellites. Limits on Starlink’s services in Ukraine occurred abruptly, according to presidential adviser Serhii Beskrestnov.
Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) expressed support for President Trump’s initiative for an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. However, he criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for not honoring the ceasefire plan.
During his speech at the AUSA convention, Hegseth faced anti-war protesters condemning U.S. military operations abroad. He led discussions on the future of autonomous warfare alongside military officials.
In additional news, a legal group filed a Hatch Act complaint following the search of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s home. Meanwhile, varied events connected to the defense world are scheduled for tomorrow, including speeches by UK Defense Secretary Wes Streeting and Hillary Clinton, as well as a book release event hosted by the Atlantic Council.
