Ramaswamy Campaign’s Advertisement Controversy
Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign recently faced scrutiny after removing a man with a serious criminal conviction from an advertisement supporting his Republican bid for Ohio governor. The campaign stated that it was unaware of Vernon Edwards’ background when producing the commercial.
Vernon Edwards appeared alongside his wife, Patricia “Patty” Edwards, in footage used in an advertisement focused on rising property taxes and her fears about potentially losing their home and farm. Newsweek confirmed Edwards’ criminal history through an Ohio appeals court decision. The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office registry lists Vernon Thomas Edwards and notes that he is subject to lifetime sex offender registration.
The Ramaswamy campaign informed Newsweek of its lack of prior knowledge regarding Edwards’ background before removing him from the advertisement. Campaign spokesperson Evan Machan explained, “This ad was based on a real interaction between Vivek and an Ohio woman who was distraught at a county fair because she may have to move out of her home due to rising property taxes. We had no knowledge of the circumstances now being reported.”
The Encounter at Lorain County Fair
The advertisement originated from Ramaswamy’s encounter with Patty and Vernon Edwards at the Lorain County Fair in September. During this meetup, Vernon Edwards shook Ramaswamy’s hand, with the candidate complimenting his patriotic shirt. Patty Edwards then expressed her concerns about rising property taxes with Ramaswamy, worrying that escalating bills could force her family from their home and farm.
Weeks later, the campaign produced an advertisement featuring Patty Edwards discussing these concerns directly to the camera, with footage at a kitchen table. Her husband Vernon appeared in footage from the earlier encounter but was not the focus of the commercial.
The Bulwark reported Edwards’ appearance in the advertisement, prompting the campaign to remove him. Following the revelation of Edwards’ criminal background, a social media video showing Ramaswamy’s interaction with the couple was also removed.
Vetting Procedures Under Question
The incident has sparked questions about the campaign’s vetting procedures, given that information about Edwards’ conviction and registration status was publicly accessible. The campaign did not disclose details on what vetting took place before the advertisement’s production.
Acton Campaign Critiques Ramaswamy
The campaign of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Dr. Amy Acton responded strongly to the controversy, describing the decision to feature Edwards as disqualifying and criticizing Ramaswamy’s judgment.
The Acton campaign accused Ramaswamy of deliberately amplifying Edwards, conflicting with Ramaswamy’s assertion that his campaign was unaware of Edwards’ background prior to media reports. Acton campaign spokeswoman Addie Bullock criticized Ramaswamy over his political ties and previous treatment of Acton.
The Ramaswamy campaign emphasized that the advertisement intended to highlight the strain of rising property taxes, with Edwards removed once his background was discovered.
Despite the controversy, Patty Edwards defended her involvement in the advertisement during an interview with The Bulwark, stressing that the campaign had approached her about participating rather than her husband. She disputed the case against her husband, asserting that he had completed his sentence and had been “an exemplary citizen” since then.
Ohio Governor Race and Polls
This issue arises as Ramaswamy and Acton vie to succeed Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. According to the latest RealClearPolling average reported by the Daily Mail, Acton leads with 48.1 percent, while Ramaswamy stands at 44.1 percent, showing a 4-point lead for the Democrat. These figures include polls conducted from September 18 to October 6.
Ramaswamy’s campaign attempts to shift the focus back to property-tax concerns, stating, “The fact of the matter is that property taxes are insanely high and causing many Ohioans to consider moving out of their homes,” through spokesperson Machan.
Meanwhile, Acton’s campaign uses the situation to question Ramaswamy’s judgment as both candidates compete for governorship.
