Raiders Consider Trade for Jaguars’ Brian Thomas Jr. to Enhance Offense

1 hour ago 0

Kirk Cousins currently leads the Las Vegas Raiders as their starting quarterback, but Fernando Mendoza, the No. 1 overall draft pick, is viewed as the team’s future. Mendoza recently experienced his first NFL game time during a loss to the New England Patriots, where he completed 6 out of 8 passes, covering 48 yards during garbage time.

As Mendoza prepares to assume the role of QB1, the need for a more robust offensive arsenal becomes evident. Presently, the Raiders rely heavily on tight ends and running backs such as Brock Bowers, Michael Mayer, and Ashton Jeanty as their primary pass-catchers. Tre Tucker, a key receiving target, has demonstrated solid performance with 19 receptions totaling 274 yards and a touchdown over five games. Despite his contribution, he has yet to emerge as a leading wide receiver in the NFL, prompting analysts like Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report to suggest that the Raiders explore trade options to strengthen their receiving corps.

Knox put forth the idea that the Raiders inquire about Brian Thomas Jr.’s availability from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Thomas, once a standout rookie, appears to have been phased out of the Jaguars’ offensive plans. Meanwhile, rookie wide receiver Josh Cameron, who has accumulated 117 yards and 2 touchdowns, is increasing his influence on the team.

The trade return Arizona received for Marvin Harrison Jr. might influence Jacksonville’s willingness to trade Thomas Jr., Knox wrote. While Thomas made a significant impact as a rookie, his role has diminished. Considering Cameron’s rise, acquiring value for Thomas seems logical.

Knox suggested that Jacksonville might seek a return similar to what Arizona received from the Houston Texans for Harrison Jr., potentially involving 2027 second- and sixth-round draft picks. Given Thomas’s strong rookie performance with 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns and his young age of 24, such a trade could be advantageous for the Raiders.

Thomas’s past achievements eclipse what the Raiders might expect from prospective 2027 draft picks, making him a more reliable option than prospects like K.J. Duff from Rutgers, Duce Robinson from Florida State, Ryan Wingo from Texas, Nick Marsh from Indiana, and Nyck Harbor from South Carolina.
