The Hechinger Report is dedicated to illustrating how education can be improved, addressing both inequality and innovation. This commitment highlights the significance of education in society.
I found myself in a similar pursuit when I received my new role. Even though my official role as director of the Del Valle Independent School District’s Disciplinary Alternative Education Program was scheduled to begin on July 22, 2015, I chose to take initiative earlier. The formal start date did not deter me from stepping onto the campus several weeks in advance.
I anticipated the challenges that come with preparing for a new school year. By starting early, I aimed to ensure that everything would be ready for the students and staff when the first day of school arrived. This proactive approach was driven by an understanding of the urgency in addressing educational needs effectively.
I had a small portable speaker and a microphone. I played, “Lean on Me.”
This simple yet powerful act was part of connecting with the community, setting a tone of support and collaboration as the school year approached. The song selection underscored a message of unity and mutual support, foundational elements in an educational environment.
