Trump Takes Credit for Walmart’s Price Cuts; Retailer Silent on Involvement

On Monday, President Donald Trump claimed that Walmart’s recent price cuts were due to his administration’s influence. However, Walmart did not mention any collaboration with the administration in its statement.

Trump has faced criticism for inflation rising during his presidency. This began with tariffs and continued with the Iran conflict starting in late February. Despite announcing a bipartisan housing cost reduction measure, Trump dismissed it as insignificant and blamed Democrats for persistent inflation.

With the upcoming November midterm elections affecting Congressional control, Trump labeled Democrats as communists who interfere with private businesses. Yet, he announced on social media that Walmart reduced prices at his administration’s request, specifically mentioning a price drop on ground beef by nearly 15%.

Walmart has seen some benefits from inflation under Trump’s leadership. Shoppers have sought cheaper options at its stores and online, as noted in its May quarterly earnings report. Following Trump’s social media post, Walmart stated its price reductions at Walmart and Sam’s Club are intended to offer better deals for the summer.

Walmart’s statement highlighted price cuts for items like ground beef, corn, red cherries, ice cream, potato chips, and beverages from Coca-Cola and Pepsi. The statement did not acknowledge any dealings with the administration or respond to Trump’s assertions.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, consumer prices have risen 4.2% over the past year, higher than the 3% rate when Trump took office. However, some inflation pressures might lessen, as a temporary ceasefire agreement with Iran has decreased oil prices and allowed more tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

Previously, Trump used Walmart as a consumer indicator and instructed the company to absorb the costs of tariffs he imposed. “Walmart should STOP trying to blame Tariffs as the reason for raising prices,” Trump posted last year, urging Walmart and China to manage tariffs without affecting consumer prices.
