The Greenville County Coroner has disclosed the cause of death for actress Hayden Panettiere at the age of 36. Her demise was attributed to a tragic accident resulting from the toxic effects of fentanyl and other substances. Reports from Los Angeles indicate that her unexpected death occurred in South Carolina.
According to a frantic 911 call, Panettiere’s final moments involved attempts to revive her. Zach Hickerson, the brother of her on-and-off boyfriend, discovered her unconscious in a South Carolina apartment on August 16. In a seven-minute audio recording, Hickerson performed CPR while Brian Hickerson administered Narcan.
Zach told dispatchers that he arrived back at the residence following a church visit and found his brother along with Panettiere inside. He noted, “He woke up, and his girl… she’s unconscious.” When asked if she was breathing, Zach replied, “No, I don’t think so.” Guided by the dispatcher, Zach worked on chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until emergency crews arrived.
Panettiere’s significant role was as Claire Bennett, the iconic cheerleader in NBC’s “Heroes” from 2006 to 2010. Her sudden passing shows how the fentanyl crisis affects people across all sectors, a point underscored by a Stanford psychiatrist.
Despite CPR efforts and the administration of Narcan, firefighters and EMS teams found Panettiere unresponsive when they reached the scene, declaring her dead at 2:32 PM. The combination of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol, and quetiapine were reported as causes of her accidental death.
An official statement from the Greenville County Coroner’s Office detailed that at 1:51 PM, a report of cardiac arrest at 701 Easley Bridge Road came in. Although advanced life support was attempted, Panettiere passed away after unsuccessful resuscitation.
The Coroner’s Office, in collaboration with the Greenville City Police Department, verified her identity as Hayden Leslie Panettiere from California. An autopsy ruled out trauma as a factor in her death.
Hayden Panettiere had recently detailed her struggles with postpartum depression in her memoir. Prior to her passing, she and Brian Hickerson had traveled together from Los Angeles, with their friendship renewing after a brief separation in 2022.
Additionally, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has been contacted to assist with the investigation into her death.
