Millions of NFL fans spend each Sunday with Scott Hanson, the host of the popular NFL RedZone. Hanson is known for his awareness of when flags are thrown or missed during games, providing updates on significant moments from each Sunday afternoon match.
Recently, ESPN Insights reported that NFL officials had called more penalties through Week 4 than in any other season since 1978. This included 17 nullified touchdowns, a significant increase from five during the same period last season.

Hanson shared his thoughts on the state of NFL officiating in an interview with OutKick.
“I believe the NFL released a statement about penalties,” Hanson mentioned, referencing the league’s denial of concerns related to the number of flags in 2026. “The NFL says penalties per game are actually down this year.”
When asked about the ESPN report, Hanson expressed respect for everyone involved in the NFL, including players, coaches, support staff, and officials. He believes NFL football is the best officiated compared to other major sports.
Discussing the perception of excessive flags during the regular season, Hanson said, “People might say I’m a company man, but that’s genuinely how I feel. The number of flags is immaterial; accuracy is what matters.” Hanson admitted mistakes happen, noting that the human eye may struggle to keep up with fast-moving action.
OutKick argued that the NFL reduces minor penalties during the postseason to maintain game pace. This approach brings up a question: why manage games differently between regular season and playoffs?
Hanson questioned this theory. “I’m not so sure they call it differently [in playoffs],” he replied. “Every game in playoffs has heightened scrutiny, which creates narratives.” He explained that playoff officiating crews are made from esteemed officials. Hanson suggested making official grading public to help fans understand officials’ qualifications for playoff games.
Later, Hanson and his interviewer held a respectful discourse on other topics, including Historical Jesus, available on YouTube.
