The Department of Justice has launched a comprehensive initiative against fraud, executing over 1,000 significant enforcement actions. This effort, led by the newly formed National Fraud Enforcement Division, focuses on safeguarding federal aid programs, including Medicaid, SNAP, HUD, Social Security, and SBA, from fraudulent schemes. These programs play a crucial role in supporting the elderly, sick, and homeless populations across the United States.
The FBI recently announced the return of Manjit Singh Bedi, a fugitive charged with fraud, to the United States. Arrested in India, Bedi is accused of stealing more than $600,000 in federal food stamp benefits through a fraud scheme in Tacoma, Washington. This operation involved manipulating SNAP recipients’ Electronic Benefit Transfer cards, providing them cash instead of approved food purchases, and retaining a portion of the benefits.
Bedi, previously included on the FBI’s Most Wanted Fraudsters list, has been under charges since fleeing the United States to Canada and then India. A federal arrest warrant for violating his release conditions was issued in May 2026. His capture is a result of the FBI’s focus on extraditing individuals involved in major fraud cases. FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized the agency’s successes in international cooperation, noting 260 extraditions in the last 20 months, marking a 70% increase over the prior period.
Bedi’s case highlights ongoing efforts to bring high-value fugitives back to face justice in the United States. His return showcases the effectiveness of the FBI’s Most Wanted Fraudsters program. Over the past three months, this program has led to the capture of six fugitives. Bedi was also formerly subject to an FBI reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction.
Director Patel acknowledged the crucial support from international law enforcement partners, noting the collaboration as essential in achieving these recent successes. The campaign against fraud continues as federal agencies strive to protect taxpayer money and uphold the integrity of social programs.
