The Bend-La Pine Schools district in Oregon has expressed deep sorrow following a mass shooting that claimed the lives of three young students and a teacher. On Saturday, the district commended the bravery of an educator and a staff member who risked their lives during the attack.
The Community’s Response
In a heartfelt social media post, the district stated, “Our hearts are broken. They responded to an attack on their school in a way for which we are forever grateful.” Special education teacher Megan Lambert, who was 25, lost her life during the incident. Lambert had joined Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend this fall for her first teaching role.
“She was a bright light for her students, family, and our community,” the district shared, adding that her loss would be felt deeply.
Bravery in the Face of Danger
The district also praised Becky Drury, an inclusion educational assistant. She was injured in the attack but is in recovery mode. Drury’s courage, along with a learning specialist who confronted the shooter, was acknowledged by the community. The specialist showed courage by directly engaging the assailant.
Impact of the Tragedy
The shooting has left the Bend community grappling with grief. Residents gathered near the school to pay tribute to Lambert and the young victims: 5-year-old Rhoam Summer and two other unnamed children aged 8 and 11. Families of the latter have opted for privacy regarding public disclosure of names.
Both a 7-year-old girl and Drury were injured, but they are currently recovering. Mourning continues as community members place flowers, offer prayers, and leave supportive messages in chalk at the memorial outside the school.
Commendable Acts of Heroism
Kaylub Giamanco, a father of two students at Silver Rail, has been recognized for his heroic actions during the attack. During his lunch break, Giamanco observed the teenage gunman entering the school armed with a shotgun. He obtained his legally secured pistol and acted swiftly to engage the shooter, ultimately fatally shooting him.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz highlighted the rapid and decisive actions of citizens and staff. An unnamed teacher, who threw a cellphone and tackled the gunman, was praised for her willingness to protect the children. Krantz remarked on Friday that her courage represented true heroism, potentially preventing further bloodshed.
