The upcoming election for the Illinois Senate seat in the 42nd District features Democrat Jared Ploger and Republican Edgardo Perez. They aim to fill the position of Linda Holmes, D-Aurora, who will retire at the end of her term. Ploger, 51, based in Aurora, has identified key voter concerns such as taxes and affordability. He noted the prevalent worry about high property taxes in the district. “Many residents voice frustration over governmental policies and how they affect living costs,” he said.
Ploger connects residents’ concerns to tariffs and related economic pressures. In discussing affordability, he highlighted issues with housing, water, utilities, and the role of data centers. He acknowledged environmental concerns tied to these data centers. Ploger, if elected, plans to prioritize infrastructure, living wages, and educational funding. “Our area’s rapid growth puts stress on infrastructure,” he explained, emphasizing the need for investment in roads, transportation, and hospitals. He also urges that wages must align with living expenses.
On education, Ploger praised the district’s top-performing schools contributing to property values. He advocated for exploring additional revenue sources, like the millionaires’ tax, without burdening the middle and lower classes. “We must maintain educational excellence,” Ploger concluded.
Edgardo Perez, 62, also from Aurora, reported that constituents voice concerns about taxes, data centers, and lack of awareness of their representatives. Voters, he noted, feel disconnected from decision-making processes concerning taxes. “There’s a call for more transparency regarding tax spending,” he said, citing demands to understand contributions to local development and schools.
Perez addressed environmental concerns tied to data centers, which locals fear might overuse resources like water and occupy significant space. Yet, he recognized the ongoing demand for technological infrastructure and questioned where associated revenue would benefit the community. A significant concern is that residents are unfamiliar with their state senators, something Perez aims to change.
Should Perez win, his focus would be on transparency, veteran support, and youth opportunities. “Transparency is crucial,” he stated, advocating for public involvement in decisions like tax increases. “That’s where referendums could empower constituents.” Perez also committed to better support local veterans through community-driven initiatives, beyond federal aid. Youth, and particularly families with special needs, are paramount for Perez. He seeks to develop programs aiding these families beyond childhood and into adulthood.
