Two key Democratic strongholds in Texas, Harris and Dallas counties, reported record-breaking first-day early-voting numbers. This development bodes well for Democrats in these essential parts of the state. Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico is now a notable contender with a slight lead over Republican Ken Paxton, according to recent polls. In the gubernatorial race, Republican Governor Greg Abbott faces a close contest with Democrat Gina Hinojosa, who has narrowed Abbott’s lead to about 2 points.
A Democrat has not claimed a statewide victory in Texas for 32 years. The possibility of Texas turning Democratic has caused concern among Republicans regarding which party will control the Senate in the final years of President Donald Trump’s administration. Trump secured Texas by nearly 14 points in the 2024 election. However, his approval rating has declined in Texas and nationwide due to economic issues, high gas prices, and international concerns.
Republicans are rallying rural and suburban voters to support their cause. Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and conservative commentator Mark Levin emphasized the stakes involved. On Patrick’s podcast, they stressed the importance of rural voter turnout in contrast to growing Democratic efforts. Newsweek tried to contact the Talarico and Paxton campaigns for commentary but did not receive responses during regular office hours.
Day 1 of Early Voting: Key Insights
In Harris County, which includes Houston, election officials reported unprecedented turnout on the first day of early voting for a midterm election. By 3:30 p.m. on Monday, over 70,000 voters had cast their votes, surpassing the 2018 record of 63,188 with time still remaining in the day. Despite this increase, Harris County now has significantly more registered voters than in 2018, marking a 14.7% rise to 2,702,952 voters.
Similarly, Dallas County shattered its first-day early voting record. Judge Clay Jenkins announced that 76,069 voters participated, beating the previous record set in 2020 by 25.6%. Dallas County’s registered voter count has increased by 4.7% since 2020. Meanwhile, El Paso County, another Democratic bastion, experienced its second-highest early voting turnout for a midterm, with 22,412 votes cast.
Harris and Dallas counties are pivotal for providing Democratic candidates with significant voter margins. El Paso has demonstrated lower turnout compared to these areas but remains a Democratic-leaning region.
Republicans Encourage Rural Texans
Republicans are focusing efforts on rural voters to counter Democratic strongholds. Lt. Gov. Patrick described rural and suburban voter engagement as crucial to electoral success. Conservative influencer Levin reiterated the significance of voter turnout, warning of potential Democratic victories if GOP supporters lag behind. Outside spending by Republican leadership, exceeding $158 million, reflects concerns about maintaining control over Texas.
President Trump visited Texas three times in one month to bolster support for Paxton and plans another visit during early voting. Lt. Gov. Patrick expressed concern over conservative voter apathy and divisions ahead of the midterms.
Texan Newspapers Endorse Talarico
The Dallas Morning News endorsed Talarico for Senate, joining other major Texas newspapers like the Houston Chronicle, Austin American-Statesman, and San Antonio Express-News. These endorsements echo support previously given to Democrat Beto O’Rourke in his Senate challenge against Republican Ted Cruz in 2018.
Noting Paxton’s scandals, the Dallas Morning News editorial board emphasized Texans face a choice between a scandal-ridden candidate and Talarico, whom they praise for integrity and independence. They argue that Texans deserve an honest representative.
Polling Analysis
James Talarico has maintained a slight edge over Ken Paxton in most polls since clinching the nomination. The RealClearPolitics average showed Talarico leading by 2.2 points. A CBS News/YouGov poll conducted between October 8 and 16 found Talarico ahead by 51% to Paxton’s 49%. A University of Houston poll also found Talarico leading by 48% to Paxton’s 46%.
Governor Abbott holds a narrow lead over Gina Hinojosa according to recent polls. The RealClearPolitics average shows Abbott ahead by 3.4 points. A CBS News/YouGov poll from the same period slightly favors Abbott at 52% to Hinojosa’s 48%. However, Hinojosa has led in some polls, including a University of Texas/YouGov poll showing a narrow lead over Abbott, reinforcing the competitive nature of this race.
