Young Adults Turn to Spiritual Practices for Dating Insights

Exploring Alternatives to Conventional Dating Advice

Many young singles are seeking new ways to navigate their romantic lives, moving beyond traditional dating advice. This trend may be influenced by uncertainties in modern relationships. A recent poll conducted by DatingNews revealed that 64% of surveyed Gen Z individuals have engaged in spiritual, psychic, or manifestation-based practices for love.

The survey polled 1,013 U.S. adults online through Cherry Data Signals in August. Respondents reported using psychics, spells, crystals, tarot, and astrology charts. The appeal of these practices may stem from frustration with modern dating. Dating apps provide access to numerous potential partners and information, yet offer little clarity on emotional connections or relationship trajectories.

Some individuals find spiritual rituals useful for making sense of dating uncertainties. When analyzing profiles, messages, and compatibility fails to deliver clear answers, these rituals provide a reflective framework.

The Influence of Symbolic Systems in Dating

Dr. Dakari Quimby, a clinical adviser at Marietta Springs, an evidence-based treatment center in Georgia, explained the impact of symbolic systems on dating. These systems offer intentionality and emotional coherence in relationships.

He noted that the paradox of having numerous romantic choices online may not result in higher dating satisfaction. Repeated rejection or disappointing experiences can lead to emotional exhaustion for some individuals.

Gen Z’s Shift Towards Spiritual Practices

A prior Newsweek report highlighted that many Gen Z daters trust astrology for romantic compatibility. The Harris Poll’s Gen Z and Religion Report found 51% of Gen Z respondents regularly practice meditation or rituals, 49% engage in manifestation, and 30% use astrology or tarot. Meanwhile, 67% regularly pray, and 49% attend religious services.

The survey of 372 American Gen Zers, released last month, indicates that this generation comfortably mixes traditional religion with unconventional spiritual practices.

Reasons Behind the Appeal of Spirituality in Dating

Modern dating often involves constant evaluations, from assessing profiles to interpreting response times. Kirill Liakh, managing director of the emotional insight app Hint, told Newsweek that despite scrutinizing messages, profiles, and compatibility, daters may remain perplexed about connections.

Practices like astrology provide a language to explore these uncertainties, even if answers are not taken literally. Hint’s July survey found 56% of singles had tried to move away from analyzing people through red and green flags due to mental exhaustion. Additionally, 61% indicated this language hindered their ability to perceive individuals holistically.

Liakh mentioned that astrology and rituals offer a framework that avoids rating individuals. These spiritual and self-reflection tools may continue to intersect with digital dating as people seek personalized understanding of relationships.

The Role of Astrology and Rituals

Cheryl Groskopf, a licensed therapist specializing in anxiety, trauma, and attachment, shared that uncertainty in modern dating often leaves individuals searching for answers when suddenly a promising connection ends.

She noted that engaging in tarot readings or compatibility charts can provide a sense of control. These practices offer temporary relief from helplessness when anticipating responses or handling feelings of confusion.

Groskopf also suggested why Gen Zers gravitate towards these concepts. They grew up surrounded by dating apps, social media advice on attachment styles, red and green flags, and compatibility guidelines. Astrology provides an additional framework to understand romantic relationships. However, intellectual comprehension of relationship concepts does not necessarily make emotional uncertainty easier to manage.

Potential Downsides of Spiritual Practices

Groskopf noted that uncertainty activates the threat response, particularly for those experiencing inconsistent affection or emotional unavailability. Rituals can offer predictability in unpredictable situations. However, she warns against excessive reliance on these practices during anxiety or uncertainty.

Rituals promote reflection, but compatibility charts should never override behavior, consent, or safety. Quimby emphasized that these practices are more about navigating uncontrollable experiences rather than finding magical solutions.
