Marmion Senior Henry Miller Triumphs in Return to Football

2 hours ago 0

Henry Miller of Marmion Academy finally found success despite recent struggles. A senior running back, Miller faced setbacks over the past two seasons due to injuries. A fracture along with three torn ligaments in his ankle sidelined him since Week 3 this season, and last year he had a groin injury that ended his junior football efforts by Week 4 and cost him half of his basketball season as well.

Reflecting on these challenges, Miller stated, “Last year was definitely tough mentally. And this year, it being my senior year, wasn’t much better. When you’re injured, the only thing you can do is get in the weight room and try to get back as soon as you can.”

Miller seized a fresh opportunity on Saturday during the Cadets’ Class 4A opening-round playoff against North Lawndale at Knute Rockne Stadium, Chicago. Following a six-week break, the 5-foot-9, 170-pound athlete returned impressively. He racked up 122 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries, leading Marmion to a dominating 40-0 win over the Eagles.

“It’s honestly better than stats to get through the game and be healthy,” Miller expressed with gratitude. “I’m so grateful. All glory to God and a shoutout to my linemen as well. But just to finish the game and get a playoff win is great. It may not be against the best team but still feels good to get a win.”

North Lawndale, part of the Public League, fielded only 23 players against the Cadets, allowing Marmion (4-6) to advance to the next weekend’s first round at Sterling, who boast a 7-2 record. Senior quarterback Colin McEniry highlighted his joy at Miller’s return to the field: “It’s great getting Henry back. We definitely have a spark on offense, defense, and even in practice. He always brings the juice, so that’s really good.”

McEniry, the CCL/ESCC Red’s player of the year previously at receiver, faced his own challenges as he took on the QB role following another injury just before the season began. His adaptability and growth became evident when he completed 7 of 12 passes for 118 yards, accompanied by two touchdowns. “I still learn things every day, which I think is common for everyone,” noted McEniry. “I’m definitely more comfortable with the ball in my hands every play and in reading defenses better. I’m learning every week.”

Henry Miller is not the first in his family to excel as a running back at Marmion—his grandfather and father both played the same position. The senior, a multi-sport athlete who also participates in track and basketball, expressed his passion for the game, “I love football. It’s my favorite.” Though he only has an offer from NCAA Division III Carroll in Wisconsin, Miller remains hopeful for his college football prospects despite previous injury setbacks. “If anything, it makes me better mentally to get knocked down and come back stronger,” Miller stated. “Carrying on this offseason and getting ready for the next step will be my goal.”

Despite challenges in his return, Miller impressed on the field. Immediately after resuming play, he executed a 41-yard run to the North Lawndale 13-yard line, followed by a 6-yard attempt and a 7-yard touchdown. Miller’s contributions included further touchdowns spanning 9 and 40 yards during the game. Additional support came from junior receiver Aidan Miller, who scored a 41-yard touchdown reception and senior receiver Ryan Loria with a 27-yard scoring catch.

Post-clearance from his doctor two weeks prior, Miller still needed time to acclimate. “It hurt a little bit (Saturday),” he admitted, “But once you tape it up and take an Advil, it’s fine.” Aside from his running back duties, Miller plays strong safety, though his conditioning had been impacted, according to coach Adam Guerra. “He played about three-fourths of the running back snaps in the first half and maybe a fourth on defense. He’ll be ready for next week.”
