The Tampa Bay Rays face a precarious position in the World Series, as the Milwaukee Brewers are just two victories away from their first title. Following a dramatic Game 2 comeback, the Brewers now hold a significant advantage.
After dropping the opening game, the Rays jumped out to an early lead in Game 2. In the first inning, Chandler Simpson and Junior Caminero hit RBI singles, followed by a two-run homer from Liam Hicks, giving the Rays a four-run lead. However, the Brewers quickly responded with RBI singles by William Contreras and Garrett Mitchell, cutting the lead in half.
In the fourth inning, Drew Rasmussen of the Rays was pulled from the game after allowing another run, but Christian Yelich grounded out, preventing further damage. Despite their initial success, the Rays struggled to score against the Brewers’ bullpen, which proved effective throughout the game.
Sal Frelick of the Brewers led off the sixth inning with a solo home run, leveling the score after a lengthy at-bat against Ian Seymour. The Brewers then took the lead in the seventh inning when Cooper Pratt drove in Brice Turang with an RBI single. The Brewers had additional chances in the eighth inning, with runners on second and third, but could not add extra runs.
In the final inning, the Rays had an opportunity to tie the game as Johnny DeLuca hit a double, putting the tying run in scoring position. Yandy Diaz faced Aaron Ashby and with two outs, a controversial call on a checked swing ended the game, preserving Ashby’s streak of 15.2 scoreless innings in the postseason.
Throughout the game, the Brewers amassed 11 hits compared to the Rays’ seven, with three of the Rays’ hits occurring in the first inning. Following their initial run, the Rays did not score again.
Historically, teams leading 2-0 in a best-of-seven postseason series have a record of 79-16. The 1996 New York Yankees were the last team to win a World Series after losing the first two games at home. Game 3 is set to take place in Tampa Bay on Monday night, where the Rays will look to reverse their fortunes.
