Trump Claims Democrats Conceded Omar’s Seat Over Name Controversy

1 day ago 0

Former President Donald Trump asserted that Democrats have conceded Representative Ilhan Omar’s seat. This claim follows court filings that referred to Omar under a different name, Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, which she denies.

Federal prosecutors identified the Minnesota representative in a court submission as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” This was reported by Newsweek. Omar responded to this in a post on X, stating, “My name has always been Ilhan Omar.”

During a speech in Florida, Trump described Omar’s congressional seat as given up by the Democrats, based on allegations of her using a fraudulent name when taking her congressional oath. He said, “The Dumocrat Party has just conceded the seat of the former Ilhan Omar from the lovely country of Somalia.” No formal Democratic concession has occurred. Omar remains in Congress.

Trump had earlier called for Omar’s resignation on Truth Social. He reiterated past allegations that she married her brother, claims Omar has denied. At a rally in Iowa, Trump insisted she used a fake name to be sworn in, suggesting she must resign. He then stated, “The Republicans have just picked up a seat in the House.”

On Saturday, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized Trump for “unhinged personal attacks and baseless accusations.” Jeffries emphasized opposition to the federal government’s use against Omar, acknowledging her dedication to her constituents.

“We aggressively oppose the weaponization of the federal government against Congresswoman Omar, who continues to work hard on behalf of her constituents in Minnesota with strength and dignity.”

Contact attempts for comments were made by Newsweek to Omar’s office and the White House outside standard hours.

Trump’s Statements Regarding Omar’s Departure

In Florida, Trump informed gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds and Senator Ashley Moody to tell House Speaker Mike Johnson that Democrats surrendered Omar’s seat. A day prior, Trump referenced the court filing, suggesting Omar’s legal name aligns with someone she allegedly married, allegations yet again dismissed by Omar.

At an Iowa gathering, Trump remarked Omar has been “a scammer for a long time,” critiquing Somalia’s governmental status. He referenced his right to free speech under the Constitution.

Ilhan Omar Responds

Omar’s office countered Trump’s accusations, with her spokesperson confirming, “This is completely false. Ilhan Omar is her real name.” Post-DOJ’s filing, Omar expressed indignation on X, linking Trump to laundering unfounded theories through the DOJ.

Omar alluded to Vice President JD Vance’s name changes in her post, highlighting consistency in her own name. Vance had undergone multiple name changes throughout his life.

Addressing the marriage allegations, Omar discussed their origins from a Somali blog, propagated by conspiracy theorists. She stressed unfamiliarity with claims of having introduced her ex-husband Elmi as her brother.

Elmi, married to Omar from 2009 to 2017, is a researcher at the University of Bristol. Newsweek has documented available information about him.

Federal Raid and Ongoing Scrutiny of Omar

Tensions between Trump and Omar, the first Somali-born U.S. Representative, have persisted throughout her tenure, often focusing on her Somali roots. Earlier in October, Homeland Security conducted a raid at Omar’s residence in Washington, D.C., tied to a federal investigation. Details remain sparse.

Trump disavowed involvement in the search. Meanwhile, Omar and fellow Democrats argue the investigation carries political motives. Omar attributes the raid’s connection to the former president’s persistent criticism and eviction threats.

In his latest remarks, Jeffries stated, “After lawlessly sending his violent DHS machine to Congresswoman Omar’s home earlier this month, the President is once again peddling sick propaganda against her at a moment when political violence is surging.”
