The recent escalation in Jordan has attracted global attention. Following a violent incident at a Greek Orthodox church in the Jordanian district of Karak, where gunmen opened fire during a funeral, Jordan launched retaliatory airstrikes in Syria. Five individuals lost their lives in these airstrikes, according to the Syrian government. Jordan claims that the targets were hideouts of the terrorist organizations linked to the church attack.
Jordanian authorities captured three suspects believed to be involved. During a press conference, Obeidallah Maaytah, Jordan’s director of public security, announced the arrest of Ahmad Sami Hussein, Mish’al Zaidan Muhammad, and Hazza’ Zaidan Muhammad. These men are accused of orchestrating the attack, which left nine dead and dozens wounded.
The assault took place as attendees gathered for a funeral procession. A wave of mourning swept through Jordan, with Queen Rania and Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah attending a subsequent funeral. King Abdullah II visited the injured in hospitals. Although no group has claimed responsibility, authorities have identified the attackers as ‘takfiri,’ a term referring to extremist ideologies.
