1 week ago 0

An investigation is active following a shooting involving federal agents on the city’s Lower West Side near the Dan Ryan Expressway. The FBI released a statement late Monday night confirming a review of an agent-involved shooting near West 18th Street and Union Avenue. In accordance with FBI policy, this incident is under scrutiny by the agency’s Inspection Division.

On October 26, 2026, officers investigated the shooting scene near the 1800 block of South Union Avenue. As of 8:15 PM Monday, the outbound Dan Ryan 18th Street exit was closed, and a substantial police presence remained nearby. The Chicago Police Department (CPD) stated that its Investigative Response Team was on-site to document the event. However, CPD did not disclose the nature of the incident, the reason for federal involvement, or whether injuries occurred.

A spokesperson for the Chicago Fire Department reported one transport from 18th Street and Union early Monday evening but provided no details on the individual’s condition. Additional information about the shooting was unavailable.

Resident Marina Corona shared her observations, noting she did not hear the shooting but saw the response. “I looked out the window and saw this army of cars,” said the 30-year-old, who was walking her dog along 18th Street on Monday night, amidst police tape. Although sirens are not unusual in the vicinity, she noted, “We never saw a police presence like this.” Around 5 PM, she spotted police running frantically up and down the street, prompting her to turn off lights and lock doors, sheltering in place for hours.

Responding to inquiries about the event, an Illinois State Police spokesperson confirmed ISP’s role in traffic control assistance following the FBI’s involvement in an officer-involved shooting at 18th and Union. The FBI stated that it takes shootings involving agents or task force members seriously. Further details were withheld due to the ongoing investigation.
