As a powerful storm hit the Phoenix area, bringing strong winds and hail, bank employees noticed a familiar street vendor caught in the harsh weather. The vendor, Hilario Cruz Cruz, struggled to manage his food cart amid the storm.
The employees intervened by pulling both Cruz and his cart inside the bank, showing commendable efforts under challenging conditions. An individual inside the bank captured the rescue on video, and the footage gained immense popularity online with over one million views on TikTok.
“With one hand, I held the door against the strong wind blowing it, and with my other hand I pulled the cart inside. The young man was doing the same on his side. If I had been anywhere else, maybe they wouldn’t have been able to help me like that,” Cruz Cruz said in an interview with FOX 10 Phoenix through a translator.
A Longstanding Connection
Cruz revealed that the bank employees were familiar faces who had supported his business over the years. Their long-term relationship motivated them to act, saying Cruz should stay inside, cart included.
Despite initial doubts about the cart fitting through the door, the bank manager reassured that it would. Their decisive action ensured Cruz’s safety, and he recounted his gratitude for their intervention.
Following the storm, Cruz faced additional hurdles, navigating tree debris to return home. Yet, he soon resumed his business, offering elotes and fresh fruit along Peoria Avenue.
