44 minutes ago 0

June Jones, a respected figure in the football community, passed away at 73. His journey in coaching spanned decades and had a lasting impact, particularly at the college level. Two weeks before his passing, Jones entered hospice care due to health challenges, as reported by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. The University of Hawai’i, where he served as head coach from 1999 to 2007, confirmed his death.

Jones’ career began as a quarterback for the Rainbow Warriors. His coaching later transformed the institution, leaving a deep mark on the program. Timmy Chang, the current head coach at Hawai’i, described Jones as a pivotal figure in his own development. Under Jones’ guidance, Chang became the NCAA’s all-time passing yards leader.

“Words can’t express the sorrow,” Chang stated upon learning of Jones’ death. “As a father figure and mentor, Coach Jones gave me the chance of a lifetime. His influence continued beyond my playing years, shaping my path into coaching.”

Jones’ tenure at Hawai’i helped elevate the football program. He led the team to two conference titles and a historic season in 2007. The team went 12-0 and secured their first BCS bowl appearance. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi recalled their comeback victory against the University of Washington.

“We were down 21 points twice and won,” Blangiardi noted. “That kind of coaching was special. June’s legacy is indelible.”

Before his collegiate coaching, Jones played for teams such as the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL. He backed up quarterback Steve Bartkowski and served as interim head coach for the San Diego Chargers in 1998. His skills brought him back to Hawai’i as a head coach, opting for that role despite opportunities elsewhere.

Jones eventually took leadership positions at SMU from 2008-2014, also coaching in the USFL and CFL. His contributions extended beyond wins and titles, impacting players and the community.
