Democratic and Republican Candidates Clash Ahead of Michigan Election

55 minutes ago 0

Democratic Representative Haley Stevens appeared with Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers on Sunday. This came amidst tension with Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed in the final push before Election Day. Stevens, who lost narrowly to El-Sayed in the Democratic primary in Michigan in August, joined Rogers at a Detroit church event.

The incident follows Stevens’ call for El-Sayed to condemn an ad by an outside group. The ad linked U.S. military support for Israel to increasing grocery prices, which Stevens called antisemitic. El-Sayed critiqued Stevens for ‘relitigating’ the primary but pointed out that the ad was not affiliated with him and he disagrees with the message.

“Representative Haley Stevens is a courageous leader who deserves the respect of every Michigan voter,” Rogers said in a statement.

El-Sayed aims to refocus the campaign on Michigan voters’ concerns as he competes with Rogers. In this context, Rogers praised Stevens for her stance against the ad and for addressing the concerns of Michigan’s Jewish community.

The rift led to Stevens being asked to step away from campaign events in the days before Tuesday’s election. She had been slated to appear with El-Sayed and Representative Jim Clyburn of South Carolina at a unity event on Sunday, but El-Sayed stated, “I would rather not distract from the key issues of this campaign.”

Stevens’ fiancé, Jason Turkish, announced his support for Rogers over El-Sayed.
