Authorities in Hawaii charged Jacob Daniel Baker, 36, with murder following the deaths of three individuals in a remote community known for its communal lifestyle. The Hawaii Police Department announced the charges, which include counts of first- and second-degree murder. Baker remained in jail without bond, with his first court appearance scheduled for Monday. It remains unclear if Baker has legal representation.
The charges emerged after police captured Baker following a manhunt on Hawaii’s Big Island. The victims were discovered in the rural Puna community, renowned for its tropical landscape and free-spirited residents. Robert Shine, 69, was found partially submerged in a cement pond. Chitta Morse, 79, was identified by friends as the second victim, located a few hundred feet away the next day. The third victim, John Carse, 69, was discovered later at a location 19 miles from the other two bodies.
Police have not identified a motive for the killings. Hawaii Police Chief Reed Mahuna mentioned investigators found no links between the victims besides proximity. Besides murder charges, Baker faces burglary, auto theft, and criminal damage to property charges.
The community of Puna, characterized by lush jungle and barren lava fields, was left distressed. Many residents engage in off-grid living, trading labor for accommodation. Local Stephen Shaffer reported Baker had worked for his ex-wife, climbing coconut trees for lodging. Shaffer’s ex-wife sought a restraining order against Baker after feeling threatened by him.
Donald Hyatt, a friend of both Shaffer’s ex-wife and two of the deceased, shared that Baker had left the cabin he occupied but returned, claiming “squatter’s rights,” and issued threats. Prior to the murders, two women had sought temporary restraining orders against Baker, alleging threats and harassment. A judge denied the requests, citing insufficient evidence of harassment.
Court records reveal Baker’s involvement in 20 other cases over two decades, predominantly traffic infringements. In most instances, Baker lacked legal counsel and represented himself.
