While performing in Prague, Czech Republic, Nick Jonas unexpectedly left the stage after a laser was directed at him. The incident spotlighted the pop star, known for his participation in the popular boy band, the Jonas Brothers.
Recently, Nick Jonas, now 33, shared insights on how his faith was challenged during the early stages of his music career. An essential turning point was his family’s departure from the Wyckoff Assembly of God church in New Jersey, where his father had served as a senior pastor.
When the Jonas Brothers – comprising Nick and his siblings Kevin, 38, and Joe, 36 – began their journey in music in the early 2000s, their father, Kevin Jonas Sr., presided over the church. However, following the band’s signing with Columbia Records in 2005, Kevin Sr. was compelled to resign from his pastoral duties, and the family had to leave their church-owned residence.
In a candid discussion on the “Jay Shetty Podcast,” Nick reflected on the family’s experiences, emphasizing how the church loss became a pivotal moment in his personal life and spirituality.
Our dad was at that church for 10 years,” Nick recalled. “It was a real safety net for us and a place where we felt a part of a community.
Some families within the church sought to oust his father, which led to the end of his pastoral role, funding responsibilities for Nick and his brothers’ musical aspirations.
The family had to relocate to Little Falls, New Jersey, where they lived in a house offered at a nominal rental fee, easing their financial strain during the transition.
Concurrently, Nick started grappling with health issues leading to his diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. This came at a time when the Jonas Brothers were promoting their music through a tour of New Jersey high schools.
Despite their efforts, their debut album, “It’s About Time,” failed to meet Columbia Records’ expectations and the group was dropped, plunging them into financial difficulties. Nick admitted, “We were hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, credit card debt, money that we did not have.” These pressures, coupled with feeling “betrayed” by their church community, led Nick to question his faith profoundly.
However, in 2007, a new opportunity emerged when Hollywood Records, a part of Disney, signed the Jonas Brothers. This association marked the beginning of their rise to fame. “Thankfully, we got a call. And a couple weeks later, they had us on the Disney Channel, and things just started going,” Nick shared.
Nick highlighted that through these trials, he maintained his belief in God. Although he questioned organized religion, his personal spiritual journey helped him grow, reinforcing his relationship with faith in a meaningful way.
Nick Jonas’ reflections serve as a testament to resilience and personal growth, illustrating how challenges can lead to a more profound understanding of oneself and one’s beliefs.
