The Ravens’ Quarterback Dilemma
The Baltimore Ravens are facing significant difficulties in their quarterback lineup following injuries to key players during their Week 8 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Starting quarterback Lamar Jackson returned to play but encountered a setback. On his first offensive play, Jackson injured his thumb on his throwing hand as he collided with Bills linebacker Greg Rousseau. This forced him to exit the game, and he later returned to the sideline with a cast on his hand and thumb.
Following the game, head coach Jesse Minter announced that Jackson would be placed on injured reserve and would require surgery. This poses a challenge for the Ravens as they navigate the remainder of the season.
Backup Tyler Huntley’s Injury
In the absence of Jackson, Tyler Huntley stepped in as the backup quarterback but faced his own injury issues. Huntley suffered a toe injury in the second quarter after a tackle from Bills defensive lineman Ed Oliver. Consequently, undrafted third-string quarterback Joe Fagnano from UConn finished the game for the Ravens.
With these injuries, the Ravens appear to be significantly compromised, particularly when considering their aspirations to compete for the AFC North title. Jackson’s injury means he’ll be sidelined for at least the next four games, leaving uncertainty about his return later in the season.
Potential Solutions for the Ravens
With a “Thursday Night Football” game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on the horizon, the Ravens are in urgent need of quarterback solutions. NFL insider Mike Florio shared the latest developments, noting that Jackson is definitely out for the upcoming games and expressing uncertainty regarding Huntley’s availability for Thursday night.
Florio pointed to potential options from the Chicago Bears, highlighting backup Tyson Bagent. Ravens offensive coordinator Declan Doyle has previous ties with the Bears, having served as their offensive coordinator last year. Florio indicated potential trade discussions, though acquiring Bagent from the Bears might present challenges given his importance earlier this season during Caleb Williams’ absence.
Despite Williams’ return to the Bears, the team may opt to keep available quarterbacks in case of further injuries. The NFL trade deadline on November 10 offers a window for the Ravens to explore options and address their quarterback needs.
This situation illustrates the uncertainties within NFL rosters and the strategic maneuvers teams must consider. It remains to be seen whether the Ravens will act swiftly to bolster their quarterback position.
