Rams Utilize Unique Kicking Strategy to Overcome Special Teams Woes

1 hour ago 0

The Los Angeles Rams implemented a distinctive strategy in their latest match against the Los Angeles Chargers, showcasing three different players in kicking roles during their win. Brandon McManus successfully made all four of his attempts, including three extra points and a short field goal. Joshua Karty, brought in specifically for kickoffs, struggled twice with kicks falling short. Ethan Evans, consistent throughout the season, handled the punts.

This rare setup of dividing kickoff and kicking duties within the same team is notable. Head coach Sean McVay discussed the strategy following the Rams’ 24-9 victory at SoFi Stadium.

“The thought process behind it was we had not been having any success covering kicks,” McVay stated. “We’ve got to be better in that area, but you did see when we were able to cover it, because he hits a really good ball that’s hard to field. They’re not going to be able to field it cleanly and we’re getting a start before they’re getting their return set up, that was the thinking behind it. But obviously we did not want to have two plays that put it on the 40, where you’re kicking it short of the landing zone.”

The Rams have grappled with special teams challenges for several seasons. Their last two playoff exits highlighted this ongoing issue, including a punt return touchdown loss to the Seattle Seahawks and losing the field position battle against the Philadelphia Eagles. These difficulties point to a need for greater investment in this phase of the game.

Sunday’s approach showed a significant attempt to address these issues. The Rams now face the challenge of maintaining this aggressive method to ensure long-term success.
