Jaylon Johnson’s Performance Scrutinized: Bears Cornerback Faces Criticism

54 minutes ago 0

Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson’s performance has come under scrutiny this season, highlighted by a key play during the Bears’ victory over the New England Patriots in Week 7. In the second quarter, Patriots quarterback Drake Maye scrambled to the right on second-and-3, avoiding Johnson’s tackle attempt and gaining 15 yards. Despite a subsequent interception by linebacker D’Marco Jackson that maintained the Bears’ lead, Johnson’s effort drew criticism.

Retired Bears center Olin Kreutz expressed concerns on social media about Johnson’s tackling, indirectly comparing it to fumbles in other games. Johnson acknowledged areas for improvement, emphasizing the need to enhance his tackling technique and angles in open-field situations.

Despite his challenges, Johnson’s overall performance hasn’t met expectations, especially after securing a four-year, $76 million contract extension following a successful career season. Bears coach Ben Johnson acknowledged Johnson’s inconsistency and stressed the importance of evaluating player performance weekly to determine appropriate playing time.

Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen addressed the larger issue, noting that performance varies among all players and emphasizing team improvement over individual criticism.

Potential replacements for Johnson face their own challenges. Malik Muhammad II has experienced rookie difficulties, while Kyler Gordon, primarily a nickelback, continues to excel in specific roles. Other options like Josh Blackwell and Cam Lewis have seen limited action, with Lewis allowing one of the highest passer ratings.

Johnson’s numbers reflect struggles, revealing a passer rating allowed of 123.6, a catch rate of 70%, and a catch-rate-allowed-over-expected of plus-12.4%. His best game came against the Atlanta Falcons, allowing only 5 yards on four targets. However, previous performances exposed weaknesses, notably against the Green Bay Packers, where Johnson yielded 106 yards and a perfect passer rating in coverage.

Former Bears corner Charles ‘Peanut’ Tillman advised Johnson to refocus on fundamentals and suggested his current performance isn’t indicative of his athletic abilities.

Johnson responded to Tillman’s advice, reflecting on his self-critique and resolve to improve on each play. He emphasized teamwork and collaboration among defensive backs, acknowledging the role of team dynamics in coverage.

Bears general manager Ryan Poles emphasized the addition of defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons to enhance pass rush, providing significant support to the secondary. Simmons’ presence, acquired through a trade involving two first-round picks, is expected to boost overall defensive performance.

As the Bears prepare for their Monday night matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, they face challenges from a formidable opponent in Jaxon Smith-Njigba, known for leading in average yards and touchdowns.

Johnson recognized Smith-Njigba’s capabilities and emphasized the need for comprehensive defensive efforts to counter his impact.
