Following decisive victories in the midterm elections, Democrats now control both the House and the Senate. This shift has created a division within the party between those who want to challenge President Donald Trump at every opportunity and those who advocate for a more pragmatic approach, akin to that of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani, despite political differences, has shown a willingness to collaborate with the president.
In the recent midterms, Democrats secured numerous Senate, House, and gubernatorial seats, even in traditionally Republican states like Texas and Ohio. With this new power, the party is positioned to influence Trump’s final two years. Discussions have emerged about renewed oversight investigations and possible impeachment efforts.
President Trump noted that the Republicans might have retained control if his name had been on the ballot. In an interview with Politico’s Dasha Burns, Trump expressed a readiness to cooperate with the Democratic Congress. He stated, “We’re going to work with the Democrats to make sure things go well for our country.” Trump acknowledged he has the right to veto but expressed his desire to avoid constant opposition.
Democratic candidates, such as James Talarico, who defeated Republican Ken Paxton for Texas’ U.S. Senate seat, echoed similar sentiments. Talarico emphasized his commitment to serving all Texans, not seeking retribution. He said, “The people of Texas did not elect me last night for retribution.”
Other Democrats like Josh Turek, winner of Iowa’s U.S. Senate seat, and Roy Cooper, new North Carolina senator, also advocated for cooperation over confrontation. However, White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis cautioned against investigations by Democrats, stating it would oppose the interests of Americans.
The future path for cooperation between Trump and the Democratic Congress remains uncertain, but some look to Mamdani’s approach as a potential model. Despite disagreements, Mamdani has fostered a workable relationship with Trump on issues benefiting constituents. He described a meeting with Trump as “productive” and expressed willingness to continue dialogue.
In a conversation with Politico, Trump mentioned Democrats being open to collaboration. Though not committing to an immigration deal, he affirmed his readiness for bipartisan work to benefit the country.
A White House official warned against Democratic investigations, remarking that Republicans still have control over the federal government. Before the new Congress convenes in January, a lame-duck session will occur where Republicans retain control of chambers they currently hold, allowing them to advance legislation and confirm nominations.
