New Jersey Teacher’s Aide Facing Multiple Child Sex Crime Charges

1 day ago 0

Shaun M. Stebbins, a former teacher’s aide at Woodbine Elementary School in New Jersey, is facing serious legal troubles. He has been charged with 61 criminal offenses, including aggravated sexual assault and manufacturing child sexual abuse material. Investigators found several images and videos of students on his electronic devices.

Stebbins, 44, worked with pre-K students at Woodbine Elementary School in Cape May County. His tenure extended from February 2022 until his arrest on March 29, in Atlantic County. The legal proceedings began after a separate sexual assault investigation in Atlantic County and Somers Point revealed potential misconduct that involved Stebbins. This led to further investigations in Cape May County.

The search of Stebbins’ devices uncovered numerous inappropriate images and videos involving students. However, authorities have not disclosed the exact number of students affected or the timeline when the material was created. Court documents have alleged that Stebbins engaged in and filmed inappropriate acts with children in the school’s bathroom and during nap times, according to reports from ABC7.

On October 30, Cape May County prosecutors formally announced the charges against Stebbins. The list includes 29 counts of manufacturing child pornography, five counts of aggravated sexual assault, 13 counts of sexual assault by sexual contact, and 14 counts of endangering the welfare of a child. The charges for manufacturing and aggravated sexual assault are first-degree offenses that carry potential prison sentences of between 10 and 20 years, pursuant to New Jersey law. Other charges are classified as second-degree offenses, typically resulting in prison terms of five to 10 years.

Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland stated that the investigation is ongoing. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding children, saying, “Children are among our most vulnerable population, and we have a responsibility to protect their safety and well-being. Anyone who harms a child will be held accountable through our justice system.”

Stebbins is currently detained at the Atlantic County Correctional Facility as court proceedings continue. Communications from the Woodbine School District, the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office are currently withheld, as they did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Prosecutors encourage anyone with information relevant to the investigation to contact the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit at 609-465-1135 or submit an anonymous tip at cmcpo.tips.
