James Talarico and Elon Musk engaged in a heated exchange leading up to Tuesday’s election. The conflict ended with Talarico winning the Texas Senate seat, despite Musk’s substantial political contributions. Musk invested over $200 million in an attempt to prevent the state from turning blue, but Talarico remained open to cooperation.
“I’ll work with anyone,” Talarico stated in a CNN interview when questioned about accepting Musk’s call. The senator-elect emphasized his victory as a message to wealthy political donors that money cannot purchase power in the state. “We have a mandate the size of Texas,” Talarico claimed. “We must eliminate big money from politics so no billionaire can buy elections.”
Musk reportedly spent around $224 million supporting Republican candidates in Texas, largely focusing on Talarico’s opponent, Ken Paxton. In the election’s lead-up, Musk frequently criticized Talarico on X. Musk, who relocated SpaceX and Tesla headquarters to Texas, experienced a significant setback as Democratic candidates prevailed in the state. Talarico defeated Paxton, and Democratic contender Gina Hinojosa unseated Governor Greg Abbot.
The election results affected SpaceX and Tesla, with shares falling and nearly $130 billion in market value lost. Analysts cautioned that Democratic control in Texas could disrupt the rapid AI expansion and introduce new regulatory challenges for Musk’s companies.
In an interview with NBC before his victory, Talarico expressed willingness to collaborate with Musk on technology and innovation. “I admired Elon Musk before he spent $200 million against me,” he remarked. “I’m a fan of SpaceX and Tesla and respect Musk as a business leader. I prefer he focuses on his strengths rather than using wealth to influence politics.”
Following the election, Musk’s political comments on X have decreased. A post encouraging voters to “Vote red today” on Election Day was reportedly removed.
