Two soccer legends have recently concluded their international careers. A month after Lionel Messi’s final match for Argentina, Cristiano Ronaldo announced his retirement from international play for Portugal.
Ronaldo made his debut with Portugal in August 2003 at 18. During his career, he became Portugal’s greatest soccer player, known for both his talent and his contributions to the national team.
Ronaldo’s final international game was a 1-0 victory over Wales in the Nations League on September 24. He was benched for the next match against Norway, and Portugal’s manager Jorge Jesus stated Ronaldo would not start in the upcoming match against Denmark. Following these decisions, Ronaldo left the training camp.
The Portuguese soccer federation plans to hold a tribute to Ronaldo. They aim to celebrate a player who provided so much to the team and the country.
Ronaldo released a five-minute video on social media to announce his retirement. In his statement, Ronaldo expressed his pride in representing Portugal.
“To the people of Portugal. To every Portuguese person around the world, wherever you are, there is one last thing I want to tell you,” Ronaldo said. “There is an image I will carry with me forever. The moment our national anthem begins. I look around. I see my teammates. I see the stands. I see the children, the mothers, the fathers, and the grandparents. I see Portuguese people who have traveled so far just to be there. And for a few minutes, all our differences disappear. There are no clubs, no colors, no classes, no professions, no opinions. There is only one passion: Portugal.”
Ronaldo plans to continue playing for his club, Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, until the season ends. He retires at 41 as one of the most decorated players in soccer history. He holds the record for most appearances (234) and goals (146) on the men’s side of international soccer.
