President Trump declared his intention to retain Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth despite growing calls for his removal following Democratic gains in the midterm elections. In a statement to ABC News anchor Jonathan Karl, Trump affirmed his commitment to Hegseth, expressing confusion over the criticism faced by the secretary.
The critique largely centers on Hegseth’s support for the war in Iran. Many in the administration, including Vice President JD Vance, have attributed Democratic victories in recent House and Senate races to this stance. Despite these views, Trump remains firm in keeping Hegseth in the Pentagon.

Hegseth’s role has been a point of contention among Republicans as well. Notably, outgoing Senator Thom Tillis from North Carolina has suggested Trump dismiss Hegseth and appoint a new secretary while the Senate majority remains intact.
The House of Representatives might soon vote on a resolution to impeach Hegseth. The resolution could be introduced during its upcoming lame-duck session. If Hegseth retains his position, Democrats are prepared to continue their opposition when the new Congress convenes on January 3.
