Trump’s Suggestion in the Alaska Senate Race

This morning, former President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social regarding the Alaska Senate race. He suggested that the votes for challenger candidate Dan Sullivan should be transferred to incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan, as the race remains undecided. According to Trump, “The vote totals for the Fake Dan Sullivan, plus the other ‘slug’ that the Dems put on the Ballot, should be immediately given to the REAL Dan Sullivan, and the Election is over. He easily wins. There is no other fair solution!”

This scenario might occur under Alaska’s ranked choice voting system. In this system, if no candidate receives a majority on the first ballot, an instant runoff election takes place. Voters’ rankings determine the new distribution of votes. If Dan Sullivan’s votes are redistributed, they might benefit the incumbent senator, depending on voter rankings.

Republican Party Reactions After Midterms

After experiencing midterm losses, Republicans are reflecting on the results. Trump attributes the losses to external factors, while Vice President JD Vance links the party’s defeat to the Iran war. NBC’s Gabe Gutierrez provides a report for “TODAY.”

Ted Cruz’s Take on Midterm Results

Sen. Ted Cruz expressed his views on the Democratic success in the midterm elections. He described it as a clear setback for Republicans, comparing the outcome to Watergate-level events. Cruz encouraged the Republican Party to focus on economic promises during future election cycles. He noted the widespread Democratic gains as a “blue tsunami.”

Democrats Prepare for Power Shift

With new power in Congress, Democrats aim to prioritize their affordability agenda. Meanwhile, the House Oversight Committee plans to investigate Trump administration practices, from immigration policies to corruption allegations. NBC’s Ryan Nobles reports these Democratic plans for “TODAY.”

Preparations for Investigations into Trump’s Administration

Before the election results were finalized, Trump’s White House had been preparing for potential investigations by Democrats. The White House counsel’s office expanded its staff and established protocols to address inquiries from Democratic-led committees.

Unresolved Key Midterm Races

Several major midterm races remain undecided. NBC News has not projected results for some Senate and gubernatorial contests. In Mississippi, Democrat Scott Colom leads GOP Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith by a narrow margin with 96% of votes counted. Potential legal challenges might arise as Democrats aim to secure a GOP Senate seat. In Alaska, former Rep. Mary Peltola, a Democrat, slightly leads over the incumbent senator. Alaska’s use of mail ballots and ranked-choice voting could delay results. In Kansas, with 99% of votes in, Democrat Cindy Holscher maintains a lead over Republican Ty Masterson in the race for governor.

California’s unresolved House races and ballot questions demonstrate the slower vote counting in some jurisdictions compared to other states. Similarly, Los Angeles’ mayoral race is yet to be decided.
