President Donald Trump expressed optimism on Friday regarding collaboration with Democrats following their midterm victories. He mentioned potential cooperation on immigration and other economic issues, including tax amendments to enhance convenience.
Speaking at the UP.Summit near Kennedy Space Center, Trump highlighted several areas for bipartisan work. “Immigration, tax reform, and economic development are common-sense initiatives,” he noted.
Despite his cooperative tone, Trump announced Stephen Miller as the new White House Chief of Staff. Miller, known for his stringent immigration policies, replaces outgoing Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. This appointment raised concerns about the feasibility of bipartisan efforts.
Democratic leaders criticized Miller’s promotion. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer vowed opposition, while House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries labeled Miller a “reckless extremist.”
Trump defended Miller, describing him as a dedicated and smart “fighter” who has been loyal since 2015. Miller has influenced major immigration policies, including mass deportations and efforts to end birthright citizenship.
The reaction from Democrats signaled skepticism about potential cooperation. Schumer remarked Trump had “learned nothing” from the election loss, while Jeffries called Miller a “dangerous xenophobe.”
Following Republican setbacks in Congress, Trump reflected on the party’s failures. He pointed to legislative inaction in the Senate and rising oil prices as factors contributing to their electoral difficulties.
Trump criticized the Senate for stalling legislation like the SAVE America Act, which aimed to enforce proof-of-citizenship for voter registration. He described the Senate as a “roadblock” and emphasized its impact on voter perception.
Addressing market reactions, Trump linked stock market losses to the Democratic wins, despite broader economic factors like technology market concerns influencing the downturn. He predicted a recovery, asserting future success.
Despite the political challenges, Trump maintained openness to Democratic collaboration. However, with Miller’s new role, Democrats remained wary of meaningful progress on contentious issues like immigration.
