In a harrowing incident in Kraków, Poland, a gunman opened fire in the city’s Main Square, resulting in five fatalities and 12 injuries. Fox News correspondent Stephanie Bennett reported from the scene, confirming the tragedy and detailing the police response.

The Małopolska Police stated that the attack was carried out by a Polish national. The suspect allegedly used a military-style weapon and fired randomly from a moving vehicle. Six individuals were killed, including four women and two men. Both civilians and police officers were among the injured.

Video footage on social media captured scenes of panic as gunfire echoed through the popular tourist destination. Police intervened, wounding the suspect during a gunfire exchange. The area has now been secured by authorities.

A witness, speaking on the condition of anonymity, mentioned, ‘People were running everywhere. It was chaos.’

The police refuted initial reports about casualties among their ranks and confirmed the apprehension of the sole attacker. Emergency services, including ambulances and a medical air rescue helicopter, swiftly reached the scene to assist the victims.

According to Katarzyna Cisło, a spokesperson for Kraków police, additional weapons and ammunition were found in the suspect’s vehicle, indicating more potential threats had they not been thwarted.

Reactions from local and international leaders were significant. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk urged unity and requested a thorough investigation, emphasizing the need to prevent exploitation of the tragedy for political gain. President Karol Nawrocki expressed concern and called for a detailed inquiry into the incident.

International sympathy poured in, with the U.S. Ambassador to Poland, Tom Rose, expressing solidarity with the Polish people during this difficult time. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy termed the attack ‘shocking’ and stressed the importance of ensuring justice.

This occurrence is startling given Poland’s low gun-related death rate, which is among the world’s lowest. The attack coincides with ongoing political tensions within Poland, including a constitutional crisis affecting the nation’s governance.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident as the public, both domestically and internationally, seeks answers and assurances of safety.
