Alexander Zverev Wins U.S. Open Men’s Singles Title

Alexander Zverev claimed victory over Ben Shelton in four sets at the U.S. Open men’s singles final on Sunday. This triumph marks Zverev’s second Grand Slam title after his earlier success at the French Open this year.

Zverev, who entered the tournament as the top seed for the first time, took advantage of Shelton’s nervous start in his debut major final. He excelled in a nearly flawless tiebreaker and resisted Shelton’s efforts to stage a comeback, securing the match with scores of 6-3, 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-2. Fans in attendance fervently supported Shelton.

Previously, Shelton defeated his fellow American, Francis Tiafoe, in an exciting semifinal showdown. Shelton aimed to be the first American man to win a major since Andy Roddick triumphed at the U.S. Open in 2003. Additionally, he was the first Black American man to reach a U.S. Open final since Arthur Ashe in 1972.

Despite the pressure, Zverev demonstrated superior prowess during the Grand Slam tournaments this year. His momentary confusion at the end of the match highlighted his focus, as he initially did not realize he had won. Once aware of his victory, he celebrated jubilantly.
