After recovering from an injury that sidelined him for weeks, senior running back Broden Mackert made a strong comeback, showing his knack for critical plays. Committed to Western Illinois, Mackert is known for his resilience and power on the field. ‘People often tell me I’m unstoppable,’ he shared modestly, reflecting on his transition from a defensive lineman to a formidable runner with size and speed.

In the recent playoff game, Mackert, who stands at 6-foot-1 and weighs 200 pounds, was a significant contributor. He racked up 165 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns, leading Providence to a 42-34 victory over Morgan Park. Junior quarterback Dominic Vita assisted with 170 passing yards and a key 42-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end John Cullen. The win elevated Providence (9-3) to host Carbondale (10-2) in the upcoming quarterfinals.

For Morgan Park, junior quarterback Ronald Smith Jr. showed his skills by completing 24 of 46 passes for 417 yards and four touchdowns. His teammate, junior running back Jonsean Young, was a standout with two touchdown receptions and a 56-yard touchdown run.

Mackert added to Providence’s advantage with a 49-yard touchdown during a rapid sequence in the second quarter, marked by several quick scores. Senior running back Brayden McKay credited Mackert’s scoring potential, noting his leadership through action rather than words.

During this pivotal moment, junior safety Isaac Patton contributed a 57-yard fumble return touchdown and made an interception, highlighting the team’s defensive might. Patton emphasized Mackert’s reliability and consistency, underscoring his fast, physical playing style.

In the face of Morgan Park’s second-half resurgence, Mackert delivered with touchdown runs of 45 and 5 yards, anchoring Providence’s victory. As Mackert nears the completion of his high school career, he remains focused on leaving a lasting impact on his team. ‘The end of my high school career motivates me to give my all,’ Mackert stated with determination, aiming for ultimate success.

Mackert combines his physical attributes with precision, enabling him to break through defenses. His ability to maintain poise while scoring is a hallmark of his gameplay. ‘The big runs energize me, but I strive to stay balanced and consistent,’ he explained.

Growing up in Minooka and starting his football journey with his brother Easton, Mackert has embraced challenges along the way. Reflecting on his transition to Providence from a public school, he acknowledges the team’s strong bond, noting resilience from past experiences, such as last year’s narrow championship loss to Wheaton St. Francis.

Off the field, Mackert enjoys leisure activities like bowling and drawing. ‘Bowling is a relaxing hobby,’ he remarked, admitting to occasional games exceeding a 200 score.

Leading the team in rushing touchdowns last season, Mackert remains committed to advancing through the playoffs. His focus is on teamwork and mentorship, ensuring that the younger players are inspired. ‘I do it for my teammates and those who look up to us,’ he affirmed, highlighting the team’s camaraderie and unity.
