New York Attorney General Letitia James delivered a strong warning to the Democratic Socialists of America. Speaking at a Brooklyn Democratic leadership event during the SOMOS political conference in Puerto Rico, she addressed potential challengers to presumptive House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries.
James stated, “For those who live in his district and are so drunk of power to think that they’re going to run against this man, you’ve got to get past this neighborhood and Tish James.” Her comments were made to a supportive audience, showing solidarity with incoming House Majority Leader Jeffries.
Jeffries, currently House Minority Leader, represents New York’s Eighth Congressional District. This area includes communities like Coney Island and Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn. The Attorney General emphasized, “We are going hard. We are going hard for our speaker.”
James, formerly a Brooklyn councilwoman, did not directly name the DSA in her remarks. However, tensions between centrist Democrats like Jeffries and more radical groups like the DSA are evident. The DSA has expressed dissatisfaction with Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for being too centrist.
While James spoke in Puerto Rico, the DSA organized a rally and march in Manhattan. They celebrated what they called the “blue tsunami” of Election Day successes and pushed for new leadership if traditional Democrats do not align with their far-left agenda.
