Senator Bill Cassidy, known for his 2021 vote to convict President Donald Trump during impeachment proceedings, has lost the Republican primary in Louisiana. Two candidates backing Trump will proceed to a runoff. Representative Julia Letlow, endorsed by Trump, will compete against state Treasurer John Fleming in a June 27 runoff, as projected by NBC News.
Cassidy’s defeat highlights Trump’s ongoing influence over the GOP. The outcome signifies another Republican who voted to convict Trump in 2021 will not return to Congress next year. Letlow led the primary with 45% of the vote, while Fleming garnered 28% and Cassidy 25%, with 93% of votes counted. The runoff is necessary as Letlow did not secure a majority.
Trump expressed satisfaction over Cassidy’s loss via a Truth Social post, citing Cassidy’s ‘disloyalty’ for his political downfall. Cassidy, in his speech, did not directly mention Trump but alluded to the situation, rejecting claims of a stolen 2020 election. He expressed gratitude for his service and dismissed fabricating excuses in defeat.
Our country is not about one individual. It is about the welfare of all Americans, and it is about our Constitution.
Cassidy’s political career faced challenges from attacks on his impeachment vote. No Republican senator has lost a primary since 2012, but Cassidy’s position became strained due to his conflict with Trump. He acknowledged before the election that his impeachment vote ‘might be’ a liability, though he continued to support Trump’s policies in many areas.
For some voters like Elias Jacob FaKouri, Cassidy’s impeachment vote was a betrayal. Meanwhile, Cassidy’s supporters appreciated his independence, with Donny Gutierrez praising his reduced party influence as a positive trait.
Cassidy’s campaign also targeted Letlow on issues like stock trades and DEI initiatives, branding her ‘Liberal Letlow.’ Letlow countered these claims by noting that a third party managed her stock transactions.
Trump’s endorsement has boosted Letlow’s campaign, which she highlighted as a significant energy source among Louisiana Republicans. Letlow, endorsed by GOP Governor Jeff Landry, criticized Cassidy and Fleming as ‘never Trumpers.’
Fleming, also an avowed Trump supporter, lacks Trump’s endorsement but promotes himself as a ‘true conservative.’ Having served as a state treasurer and founding the House Freedom Caucus, Fleming has partially financed his campaign, cementing his stance against Cassidy.
With both primaries in runoff stages, Republicans remain in a strong position to retain the seat come November. Recent electoral trends in Louisiana favor Republicans, with Trump previously winning by significant margins.
