After an extensive search by an international team of rescue divers, the bodies of four missing Italian divers have been discovered in an underwater cave in the Maldives. This follows the recovery of a fifth body last week. The Maldives National Defense Force confirmed the discovery on Monday.
The four divers were found inside a cave in the Vaavu Atoll as part of a joint search and recovery effort. The operation included experts sent by the Italian government. This marks the conclusion of an international rescue mission that scoured deepwater formations for the missing individuals.
Tragically, a diver from the Maldives National Defense Forces died on Saturday from decompression illness during the search. The missing group was part of a larger expedition of Italian researchers in the Maldives, a region celebrated for its clear waters and popular diving locations.
The dive, held on Thursday, was aimed at exploring deepwater reefs and caves and required specialized equipment due to its hazardous nature. The group consisted of a marine scientist accompanied by her daughter. They did not surface after reaching a cave depth of approximately 50 meters (164 feet). A distress call was received by the Maldives coast guard around noon on Thursday. By evening, one body was found at a depth of 196 feet, beyond their intended dive range. Recovery of the bodies will continue over the coming days.
Not all members of the expedition participated in the dive, with at least 20 others remaining safe. This tragedy highlights the dangers associated with deep-sea exploration in the Maldives and underscores the critical need for safety measures during such expeditions.
