Two explosions occurred at the May Ship Repair Contracting Corporation on Staten Island, resulting in the death of one subcontractor and leaving several others injured. The blasts followed a fire that erupted on a dock under construction.
Nadia Adam, executive vice president of the company, confirmed the incident. She stated that the dock had been under construction for nine months without any issues. The subcontractor who lost his life had been involved in several projects with the company, and leaves behind a wife, a son, and a daughter.
Authorities from the Fire and Police Departments were present at the site on Saturday, conducting investigations into the cause of the explosions. The company, a small family-owned business employing fewer than 50 individuals, is fully cooperating with the investigation.
“Safety is our first priority,” Adam emphasized. “Understanding what happened is our first priority.”
Ms. Adam recalled how she was in her office at the shipyard when notified of the explosion. The company immediately called 911 and adhered to its safety protocols.
Currently, investigations are underway to determine more details about the cause of the fire and subsequent explosions.
