Felix Rosenqvist finally claimed victory in the Indianapolis 500, delivering an exhilarating performance that saw him enter the winner’s circle after four previous attempts. The 34-year-old Swede edged out his competition in a thrilling finish, marking the most memorable moment of his career, especially after becoming a father.
Rosenqvist made a pivotal move in the last moments of the race, passing David Malukas by half a car-length in the closest finish in 500 history. His victory came 20 days after welcoming his daughter, Stella. He credited his newfound focus on fatherhood as reducing the pressure to win.
After we had our baby, Stella, I felt I’d already won the month of May.Rosenqvist expressed the joy of winning as an added delight to an unforgettable month.
Though his wife Emille and daughter were not present at the race, Rosenqvist celebrated vigorously by dousing himself with milk. It marked his second win in 120 IndyCar starts and his first on an oval track.
Despite achieving top nine qualifying runs in the past five races and finishing fourth twice in four years, Rosenqvist couldn’t secure a pole. On race day, he faced setbacks but remained determined. A red flag waved with seven laps left, and he lost the lead, but his aggressive final move secured his victory.
If Marcus Armstrong had not let him pass, it could have been a different story. Armstrong acknowledged needing to lift to avoid a crash with Rosenqvist.
Rosenqvist’s victory dethroned Malukas, who finished second for the second consecutive year.
The race marked another win for Meyer Shank Racing and celebrated Helio Castroneves’s first victory as a team owner. Rosenqvist’s win edged out a previous record set in 1992 by Al Unser Jr. and Scott Goodyear.
A disappointed Malukas reflected on his performance, noting he had pushed harder than ever but couldn’t surpass Rosenqvist in the final lap.
Rain delays and crashes, including an incident involving rookie Caio Collet, added to the drama. Mick Schumacher’s brush with the wall set the stage for a thrilling finale. Rosenqvist capitalized on the final restart to take the lead, staying committed to his strategy despite high pressure.
Reflecting on the race, Rosenqvist noted that embracing fatherhood brought him peace and lessened the burden of racing pressure. This mindset, he said, contributed significantly to his success that day.
Alex Palou, though leading with the most laps and passes, placed seventh after a post-race penalty for a technical violation. He still managed to extend his series lead.
Double Trouble
Katherine Legge faced adversity as well; her bid to complete “The Double” ended prematurely. Her race ended after a collision with Ryan Hunter-Reay, sending her off track. Despite the crash, she was released from the medical center and prepared for the Coca-Cola 600 in North Carolina.
