Anne Hathaway recently opened up about a long-held secret medical condition. During an appearance on The New York Times’ podcast “Popcast,” the actress shared her struggle with an eye condition. For ten years, she was “legally blind” in one eye due to an early-onset cataract.
“This is maybe too much information,” Hathaway stated. “I was half blind for 10 years.” The condition was severe enough to render her legally blind in her left eye until she underwent surgery, only realizing the extent of her vision impairment afterward.
The Mayo Clinic explains that cataracts lead to clouded lens vision, causing people to see through frosty or fogged-up windows. Such clouded vision from cataracts can make reading or driving at night difficult and may hinder recognizing expressions on people’s faces.
Now with improved vision, Hathaway describes it as a “miracle.” She expresses gratitude, saying, “I appreciate vision because I literally feel like every day, I wake up and I get to see the way that I do, it’s a miracle.” She’s aware that earlier generations might not have had the same opportunities for treatment.
In addition to discussing her vision, Hathaway addressed rumors about plastic surgery. Despite having a preference to avoid public attention, she responded because the speculation became overwhelming. Hathaway said, “The speculation has gotten so loud that you do feel the need to just get your truth out there.”
Hathaway emphasized, “These are huge medical decisions that people are presuming.” She assured that her recent changes were not due to surgery, joking, “By the way, the other thing about all this is, I might still get a facelift someday.”
