Adam Copeland and Christian Cage broke a 25-year gap without a tag team championship victory on Sunday. They defeated Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler in their match for the AEW Tag Team Championship at the Double or Nothing event held in New York.
Intense Battle
The match between Copeland and Cage against FTR was intense, featuring ladders, tools, and even a flaming table. Both teams endured severe punishment as the battle unfolded. For example, Christian Cage repeatedly endured blows to his arm, while Wheeler suffered a near injury to his nose. Additionally, barbed wire injured all participants.
Unexpected Interference
Stokely Hathaway, associated with FTR, joined the fight. However, Beth Copeland, previously known in wrestling as Beth Phoenix, unexpectedly intervened to level the playing field. Despite her efforts, she was incapacitated before she could influence the match.
During the altercation, Dax Harwood set up a table, added lighter fluid, and ignited it. Wheeler aimed to spear Beth Copeland through the flames, but Hathaway was instead driven into the table.
Victory Achieved
Following the chaos, Copeland and Cage focused on Harwood, using numerous submission techniques. Beth Copeland handed her husband a spiked bat, intensifying Harwood’s predicament. Harwood ultimately uttered the decisive words, “I quit,” resulting in Copeland and Cage securing the championship titles.
Previously a renowned tag team, Copeland and Cage had claimed the WWE tag team titles seven times. Since moving to AEW, achieving championship success eluded them. Now, more than two decades later, they have reclaimed their spot at the summit of the tag team division.
Historic Moment
Their last tag team championship triumph occurred in April 2001 at WrestleMania X-7. They won in a thrilling tables, ladders, and chairs match but soon lost to Kane and The Undertaker just days later. This recent victory marks a significant milestone in their storied careers.
