Chelsea Flower Show Embraces Garden Gnomes

4 weeks ago 0

The Chelsea Flower Show, known as the world’s most prestigious garden exhibition, recently stirred discussions among attendees. This year, a temporary change in policy allowed the inclusion of garden gnomes. Typically banned, these whimsical figures sparked a lively debate about their place in traditional English gardens.

King Charles III and David Beckham were among the notable figures viewing the displays. Beckham had a new white shrub rose named after him this year. The presence of gnomes provided a new layer of interest at the event.

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), the organizer of the show, decided to lift the ban as a part of a fundraising effort. They invited celebrities to decorate gnomes, aiming to engage children with gardening. This move was meant to be temporary, only applicable for 2026. It marked a significant shift in the RHS’s typical standards, which usually view gnomes as too kitschy.

Robert Brett, the curator for the RHS garden at Wisley, was clear about his stance. “Do we have gnomes at Wisley? Am I interested in gnomes? No,” he stated firmly while guiding a group at the show.

Contrastingly, Tom Allen, a British comedian, had a more optimistic view. Allen had decorated a gnome with a painted suit and tie for the auction. He expressed hope that the gnome ban might be permanently lifted. “Something that’s quirky and different and a bit passé, like a gnome, is actually what the world needs,” he said.
