California Firefighters Tackle Chemical Leak in Orange County

California firefighters engage in a night-long operation to address a toxic chemical leak in Orange County. This initiative focuses on examining the pressure inside a cracked tank at GKN Aerospace. Over 50,000 residents remain evacuated. Orange County Fire Authority’s Interim Chief TJ McGovern mentioned that the nighttime efforts aim to rule out the possibility of a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion (BLEVE) threat.

McGovern explained the peril BLEVE poses as a worst-case event. However, he emphasized that the situation hasn’t reached a critical point yet. An update was promised the following morning to reveal whether pressure release or vapor buildup inside the tank had occurred.

“The BLEVE threat is the worst-case catastrophic event that we’ve been talking about. We are not there yet; we need to run this operation tonight,” McGovern said.

The potential crack discovered in the tank on Saturday night might alter the approach to resolving the crisis. Although multiple cracks were identified initially, further clarification indicated a single crack existed, accompanied by peeling weather stripping. Constant water stream exposure was deemed the cause for confusion regarding cracks.

As the crisis continues without resolution, efforts focus on containing a leak from a tank holding around 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate. Firefighters noted the internal temperature exceeded 100 degrees, twice the normal level for the chemical.

Governor Gavin Newsom requested a federal Emergency Declaration to provide aid from FEMA and federal funds. Newsom stressed California’s proactive measures to safeguard lives and communities by collaborating with local and federal entities.

Officials confirmed around 785 responders already deployed to assist local authorities and hazardous material experts. This followed a state of emergency declaration in Orange County. Investigations seek to understand why cracks appeared, considering possible vapor buildup-induced pressure.

OCFA’s Craig Covey conveyed that temperature inside the tank rises approximately one degree per hour, contrary to previous assessments after initial evacuations. Covey emphasized avoiding an explosion or vapor leak, seeking innovative solutions.

“Letting this thing just fail and blow up is unacceptable to us,” Covey said. “Our goal is to find something and not allow that to happen.”

Accountability remains crucial, with District Attorney Todd Spitzer announcing an investigation into tank failure causes. Employees from GKN were encouraged to share information with authorities. Spitzer labeled the incident as “irresponsible” and urged cooperation from the community.

Uber offered free rides for evacuees, while hotels provided discounts. First responders received complimentary meals from establishments like Del Taco, acknowledging their efforts.
